REVLON RUN/WALK FOR WOMEN

DANSKIN WOMEN'S TRIATHLON SERIES

Programs

Women of all ages, fitness levels and experience levels are welcome. All programs are designed to accommodate the needs and abilities of the participants. The news section of this web site inclues the latest schedule information.

Swimming
One hour, group swimming lessons are offered every second and fourth Sunday each month. During class, participants focus on refining their swimming skills as well as improving their cardiovascular fitness levels. Classes are small so one-on-one instruction is possible. Classes are taught by a certified instructor at St. Mary's College Brentwood location and at Santa Monica College. All fitness levels welcome. Bring a towel and goggles.

Aqua Aerobics
One hour aquatic classes are offered weekly. This guided exercise program provides a low impact aerobic workout and takes place in the shallow end of the pool. Participants are able to exercise at their own pace. Classes are offered in conjunction with the YWCA Westside and are taught by an Encore certified instructor. Classes are held at the Santa Monica Loews Hotel swimming pool. All fitness levels are welcome. Bring a towel.

County Hospital Yoga
The Los Angeles County Hospital Yoga Program is an innovative, free exercise program for low-income women with cancer. Women receiving treatment for cancer at the County Hospital Clinics can wait long hours to see a doctor. Team Survivor provides weekly bilingual (Spanish-English) gentle chair yoga classes in a room next to the clinic where women wait for their treatment and women are invited to participate in a free yoga class while they wait.

One of the most unique and successful aspects of our program is the on-site class recruiter. Women waiting for treatment had expressed concern about missing their appointment if they attended the yoga class. The class recruiter solicits participants among the women waiting for treatment and then remains in the waiting area during the class listening for the names of women being called for treatment. Upon hearing a class participant's name, the class recruiter alerts the woman in the yoga class so she does not miss her treatment appointment.

Since January 2005 Team Survivor has served hundreds of unduplicated women at LAC + USC and Olive View + UCLA County Hospitals. In the past year our instructors have reported women coming to the hospital for the yoga classes even on days they do not have an appointment scheduled to see the doctor.

Cycling - Outdoor
One hour, volunteer led, cycling groups ride weekly. The groups typically cover 7-10 miles per ride over varied terrain. Minimal cycling experience is needed and all fitness levels are welcome. Bring a bicycle and water.

Cycling - Indoor
This one hour indoor cycling class is set to music and taught by a certified instructor. The class simulates an outdoor ride with drills similar to climbing hills and coasting on flat roads. Indoor cycling allows each individual to exercise at her own pace. Beginners can ease into this exercise routine while more advanced riders can push their cardio limits. Bring a towel and water.

Dragon Boat Training and Racing (Affiliated Programs)
Dragon Boating is a team sport in which 20 paddlers manually power a 40 foot long boat. It builds strength, stamina, and coordination while promoting teamwork. Workouts begin with stretching and warm up. Participants then get in the boat and paddle for approximately one hour. Team Survivor refers participants to two teams for women living with cancer, one in Long Beach and the other in Newport Beach. The teams practice weekly and participate in festivals throughout the year. Dragon boating can be enjoyed by all fitness levels. Bring a towel and water.

Hiking and Outdoor education
Scenic hikes are led by experienced hikers throughout the Santa Monica Mountains and to other destination spots. Beginning hikes typically take 1-2 hours and cover easy to moderate terrain. More advanced hikes take 2-4 hours and cover more difficult terrain. All hikes are planned with safety and enjoyment in mind. Some hikes include breakfast or lunch. Hike leaders have hiking, backpacking and wilderness trekking experience. All fitness levels are welcome and encouraged to join hikes appropriate for their abilities. Bring water and appropriate shoes and clothing.

Indoor Training (Strength and Core Fitness Training)
This one hour class includes cardiovascular, strength and flexibility training geared toward the specific needs of cancer patients and survivors. It is supervised by a certified trainer who monitors each individual's workout. Each class begins with a warm up, then moves into cardio training and floor exercises, and ends with cool down stretching. Classes take place in fitness studios in Los Angeles and Orange counties. All fitness levels are welcome. Bring a towel and water.

Lying Down and Letting Go™
These one-hour classes are taught by a certified instructor. Both mind and body are exercised equally, using a very gentle, but thorough routine that takes from both Western and Eastern disciplines. Designed specifically for women who are in treatment or have recently completed treatment for cancer, these classes provide a routine that enhances the flow of energy while building strength, endurance and flexibility. Classes are offered at studios and other facilities in Los Angeles. All fitness levels are welcome. Bring a mat and/or towel and water.

Yoga
Based on wisdom that has existed for centuries, yoga exercises the mind, body and spirit. These one hour, certified instructor led classes are offered in yoga studios and other facilities throughout Los Angeles and Orange counties. Yoga is an excellent introduction for people new to exercise, as it offers a gentle approach to beginning or re-establishing an exercise regimen. All fitness levels are welcome. Bring a mat and/or towel and water.

Triathlon Training
Each year Team Survivor trains a team of women to participate in the Danskin Triathlon. Training usually starts in January for this June event for Southern California. Participants are coached and guided by a warm and enthusiastic coaching staff with extensive triathlon experience. The event consists of a .5 mile swim, 12 mile bike ride, and a 3.2 mile run. Participants can select one, two or all three of the events in which to take part. All fitness levels and all levels of participation are welcome.

Walking Groups
One hour, volunteer led walking groups are offered in parks and neighborhoods throughout Los Angeles and Orange counties. The walks provide a fun, friendly way to begin, or maintain, a regimen of regular cardiovascular exercise. They also provide a natural, easy transition back to a normal exercise routine. All fitness levels are welcome. Bring water.

YWCA Santa Monica/Westside Classes
Team Survivor members can now participate in select classes at the YWCA free of charge. Classes include Step, Strong & Stretched, Timeless Body, Energy Core and several yoga classes.
